ART - Active Release Techniques

Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) relieves pain and treats soft tissue injuries restoring function.  It is the gold standard for soft tissue care.

ART stands for Active Release Technique.  It is a new and highly successful hands-on treatment method to address problems in the soft tissues of the body, including the muscles, ligaments, fascia, and nerves.  ART treatment is highly successful in dealing with soft tissues injuries because it is specifically designed to locate and treat scar tissue adhesions that accumulate in the muscles and surrounding soft tissues.  By locating the and treating the soft-tissue adhesions with ART, it allows the practitioner to, 1) break-up restrictive adhesions, 2) reinstate normal tissue flexibility and movement, and 3) more completely restore flexibility, balance, and stability to the injured area and to the entire kinetic chain.

An additional benefit of ART is it allows the doctor  to further assess and correct problems not only at the site of pain itself, but also in other areas of the kinetic chain, which are associated with movement compensations and are often contributing factors to the problem.  This ensures that all the soft tissues that have become dysfunctional, and are contributing to the specific injury are addressed, even if they have not all yet developed pain.

One of the best things about ART is how fast it can get results.  In our experience, the majority of soft tissue injuries respond very well to ART treatment, especially when combined with the appropriate home stretching and strengthening exercises.  Although each case is unique and there are several factors that will determine the length of time required to fully resolve each condition, we usually find a significant improvement can be gained in just 4-8 treatments.  These results are the main reason that many elite athletes and professional sports teams have an ART practitioners on staff, and why ART is an integral part of the Ironman triathlon series.

ART is the gold standard in treating chronic pain, sports injuries, and repetitive stress injuries.  These injuries include but are not limited to: Ankle Sprains, Shin Splints, Piriformis Syndrome, Sciatica, IT Band Syndrome, Running Injuries, Carpal Tunnel, Tennis Elbow, Throwing Injuries, Whiplash, Nerve Entrapments, Back Pain, Neck Pain, Headaches, Shoulder Pain, and many others.  It is a cutting-edge treatment for soft-tissues: muscle, tendon, ligament, and nerve disorders. ART is a state of the art soft-tissue/movement based technique that effectively eliminates pain and restores function to the body.

How does A.R.T. work?

When the body is injured due to acute trauma or an overuse-accumulative trauma the end result is inflammation and swelling.  This results in increased pressure in the area of trauma and affects the surrounding tissues.  In response to this trauma and pressure the body stabilizes the area by laying down fibrotic tissue.  This tissue is commonly known as scar tissue.  The result:

•Restricted Motion

•Decreased Circulation, which can lead to hypoxia

•Tension on the injured tissue and surround tissues

•Tension on the nerve: numbness, pain, & tingling

•Shorten Muscles

•Weak Muscles

This altered tissue and texture leads to pain, faulty biomechanics, and a decrease in performance.  A.R.T. can effectively remove the scar tissue and allow the body to repair the damaged tissue thereby eliminating pain and restoring function.

A.R.T. treats over 300 muscles and 100 nerve entrapments including damage to muscles, nerves, tendons, and ligaments.
